few 60's. 65 in arlington 56 in frederick. 54 la plata. total sunshine expected today bright and sunny, near 80 degrees for the afternoon high. if short sleeves this afternoon in march. the average high is 55. we will be well above that again tomorrow. low 80's tomorrow with scattered clouds and an isolated thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon or evening. slight chance. better chance of seeing moisture on friday. >> we want to turn to breaking news from japan. the associated press reports of a magnitude 6.8 earthquake has shaken the northern part of the country. tsunami advisory has been issued for the region. jummy olabanji has details. >> the epicenter is reported to be about 146 miles south of kushiro.

6.8 magnitude. the information is preliminary. this is the same region that was heavily damaged by last year's earthquake and tsunami. the pacific tsunami warning center in hawaii says there's no threat there or crossed the pacific. no word yet on any damage or injury. there's no trouble reported at the nuclear facility in northeast japan. the u.s. navy does have ships and other carriers in that area. no word from them on any damage. we are keeping a close eye on the story and we will update our viewers as we get more. >> thanks. our top story, a dead end to the manhunt for a murder suspect in montgomery county. last night police in rockville found the body of philip gilberti in a home on the 800 block of fordham street. that ended a 12-hour search for the man who shot and killed his former girlfriend. >> this happens in kensington

where authorities found the body of heather mcguire dead on the roadway at connecticut avenue and knowles avenue. john gonzalez as the latest. >> the 36-year-old mother who had three children with her estranged husband filed for restraining order on saturday. after being shot and killed yesterday morning, if the manhunt ended in his rock hill neighborhood. more than 100 montgomery county police officers scoured the area tuesday night looking for a killer, 51-year-old philip gilberti. was found dead late last night from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> at different locations watching vehicles, watching homes. every one of them understood how potentially dangerous this individual was. we did have information that he had the gun with him. >> george horman says the man

wanted for murder was once married to his daughter, who left him after abuse. he was harassing his estranged girlfriend heather mcguire. >> she was scared to death of him. >> on connecticut avenue in the morning it is where police believe the two were arguing when she was fatally shot in the head. eye witnesses a la connecticut avenue and kensington heard a shot from a passing car. gas station surveillance video shows a passerby's rushing to heather mcguire's aid. >> you heard a pop sound and i looked right there and the body was laying there. >> philip gilberti had a long criminal record including stalking and battery. >> thanks so much. our other big story this morning, rick santorum wins in

the south. the former pennsylvania senator took the alabama and mississippi caucuses last night, proving that he has support from conservatives and evangelicals. mitt romney finished in third place in both contests, but he did win the caucuses in american samoa. jummy olabanji explains what the latest shake-up means in the republican white house race. >> mitt romney still ahead with the total number of delegates needed to win the race. but with rick santorum gaining ground, the chance of the race may not be over until the summer is very likely. exit polls in alabama and mississippi show conservatives are split. after voters in those states say that ron is not conservative enough. they divided their votes between rick santorum and newt gingrich. mitt romney came in third in both states despite spending twice as much as rick santorum and newt gingrich combined. >> if you are the front-runner

and we are already there are higher. -- or higher. the current temperature is 56 in washington and a bit cooler in manassas. we are keeping our eyes on some thunderstorms along the coast last night but it has cleared out with high pressure building in. it is very reminiscent of something we see early in the month of may and that will come along with sunshine. the highs will reach close to 80 degrees in some areas. we had 81 officially in washington yesterday here is the seven-day outlook. maybe an isolated showers or thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon west of the blue ridge. a better chance of that for friday and weekend will be very spring-like. >> that is the kind of forecast we like. >> we can hear that over and over.
